Close calls in Regional and National Tours

Last week several players from Sutton Tennis Academy (STA) reached the finals or semi-finals of various tournaments across the UK, including a tournament on home ground.

Finn Doyle reached the semi-finals of a 10 & Under National Tour in Loughborough. He was sadly knocked out by eventual winner William Jansen 4-1 5-3.

STA triumphs at Surrey LTA awards

Two of our players received awards at the Annual General Meeting of the Surrey Lawn Tennis Association, which was held at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton on December 4. Josh Pistorius won the Roger Webb Boys Cup for Endeavour, and Matthew Beecher was awarded the Surrey LTA Progress Cup for Boys.

Close calls for our players

Last week, one of our players reached the final of an International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior tournament, while three of our other players made it to the final stages of 12 & Under Regional Tours.

Jennifer Timotin made it to the final of the Nike Junior International Grade 5 ITF event in Liverpool. She cruised through four matches in straight sets before losing in a tight 7-5 1-6 6-3 match to second seed Megan Davies.

International success from STA females

Two of our female players, Gemma Heath and Jennifer Timotin, performed well at international tournaments last week. Heath won the 14 & Under Tennis Europe Nike Junior International tournament in Edgbaston, while Timotin made it to the quarter-final of the Luxembourg Indoor Junior Open.

As the eighth seed, Heath made it through five easy matches to claim her title, defeating American player Isabella Harvison 6-1 6-4 in the final.

Mild success in the Winter Tours

The first week back after the half-term break was fairly quiet tournament-wise for Sutton Tennis Academy players, with just two of our players making it to the final stages of events.

Finn Doyle made it to the semi-finals of the Winter National Tour for 10 & Under Boys in Gosling. He was unfortunately defeated 1-4 4-2 10-4 by William Jansen, who later went on to win the tournament.

A busy and fruitful half-term for STA

Over the half-term break, several players from Sutton Tennis Academy (STA) performed well both within the UK and internationally.

In Gradigan, Bordeaux, Guy den Ouden and Arthur Fery made it to the semi-finals of doubles at the 12 & Under Open Benjamins Tennis Europe tournament, sadly being defeated by Anthony Genov and Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune 7-5 6-3. Fery was also the winner of the consolation round in singles.

STA players sweep home tournament

Our players performed well on home turf last week, when Sutton Tennis Academy (STA) hosted its Autumn Open Tournament. While we had a large number of our own players competing in the tournament, the following performed exceptionally well.

In the Boys 12 & Under division, Finn Doyle made it to the final but was sadly beaten by Rayhan Bari 6-0 6-2.

Daniel Siddall took the Boys 14 & Under title, defeating fellow STA player Guy den Ouden 6-3 6-2.

Home-ground advantage for STA players this week

Sutton Tennis Academy (STA) is hosting the Autumn Open Tournament this week. Play began yesterday and will continue until Saturday October 25. With events for 10 & Under players to the Open level, we have a large number of players competing and representing the Academy. We wish them the best of luck!

In other news, our Grade 10 Cheam High Girls’ team have made it to the Regional Finals on November 14, where they are competing for a chance to attend the National Finals at Bolton Arena later this year.
